Wikia Search :: Opening up the Search

Jimmy Wales had talked about few of his new initiatives at FSFS.in conference in Kerala, India.

Search Wikia is one of them. Unlike other search engines the methods of search indexing (algorithms) are open for all to see and understand. Would it change how the search engines work in future is yet to be seen.

Another one is Green Wiki, it aims to become the global clearing house of all information pertaining to Environmental Issues,Sustainable Living and the interesting "How to" pages that tell how you can start healing the planet right from your home .

Free Software User Group, Bangalore Wiki Relaunched

Free Software User Group, Bangalore now has a brand new site. It is built using Media wiki , which powers the Wikipedia project. The logo designed by Hiran Venugopalan is beautiful, its type and composition is just perfect. Kudos to Anivar and all the those who contributed towards this long pending task.

The old website was developed using oddmuse. It was generously hosted by deeproot for years, we had to turn off the wiki editing after I couldn't keep up with spam busting tasks anymore. Vikram has been bugging me for years to port it a better platform, it never really materialized until the task was taken up with gusto in the last gnu(s) grazing.

Mediawiki Translation Project

Here is a heads-up from the Mediawiki localisation effort. Veeven informs that Telugu (te) localisation group is almost done(see group stats). At the time writing this post most of the mediawiki messages were translated into telugu, I guess the team is working hard on the extensions part by now. Good work fellows, you might be up for the bounty. Goodluck!

On the hand, the Mediawiki Hindi(hi) translation effort is in a sad state. It would really great if one of you could take time and help out. Do I see any hands going up ?
